A selection from the
3RD RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES
ART CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR

Organised in collaboration with A.S.T.A.R.T.I. Pour l'Art Audiovisuel
29 October - 1 November 1998 at the Lux Cinema

Following the success of the event in Paris last April, the Lux has invited artistic directors and film makers Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki to present and discuss a selection of the 3RD RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES ART CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR at the Lux Cinema.

RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES ART CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR are a major international tri-annual event focusing on the moving image as visual art. Launched in Paris in 1990, it has been breaking new ground by bringing together all forms of screen-based arts, such as film, video and computer art, and by viewing contemporary art forms through a historical perspective. On the dawn of the Third Millenium, RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES ART CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR seek to cultivate an awareness of 20th century technological media, and to propose critical and comparative approaches to contemporary aesthetic phenomena.

Curated by artists Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki, RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES are unique in the investigation of a proposed concept and in their trans-technological, trans-historical approach to programming. This year's third edition raises the issue of MEDIA ECOLOGY: an "ecological" equilibrium between mechanical, optical, electronic and digital media. Presenting some forty thematic screenings and panels involving more than a hundred artists and scholars from twenty-five different countries(*), they have received an extremely enthusiastic response from the press, the public, artists and institutions internationally.

Selected projections and a panel discussion at the Lux will address some of the questions issued in Paris, such as creating links between low and high-tech practices, linear and interactive art works; acknowledging earlier artistic traditions of synaesthesia and projection devices; and raising questions surrounding the position of the media artist in the contemporary technological environment.

(*) Among them: Roy Ascott, Irit Batsry, Zoe Beloff, David Curtis, Maya Deren, Bulat Galeyev,  Jean Genet, Marina Grzinic & Aina Smid, Erkki Huhtamo, Derek Jarman, Luke Jerram, Wladimir Kobrin, Arthur & Marilouise Kroker, Sandra Lahire, Loophole Cinema, John Maybury, Nancy Paterson, Keith Piper, Jack Smith, Allucquere Rosanne Stone, Jennifer Steinkampf, Cordelia Swann, Paul Virilio, Andy Warhol, Norman White, Iannis Xenakis and the Theremin virtuoso Lydia Kavina.
Pat O'Neill, Steina Vasulka, Studio Azzurro, and Jeffrey Shaw gave long presentations of their works and practices.

RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES ART CINEMA / VIDEO / ORDINATEUR are supported by the French Ministry of Culture and the European Kaleidoscope Programme amongst others. With the participation of Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches en Arts Plastiques, Université Paris I, Sorbonne. Presented at the Lux in association with A.S.T.A.R.T.I. Pour l’Art Audiovisuel.
